The idea behind forming a club is to involve fellow MOTHs and members of the community into participating in some form of social activity. This will advertise the Order and hopefully gain some new members.
I am writing to you from Perth, Australia. I am currently searching for information on my paternal Grandfather who is now deceased but resided with his wife at the Cottesloe Moth Cottages for many years during the late 70s , 80’s and 90’s. I remember visiting them fairly often at their little cottage just behind the gas works in Cottesloe. Unfortunately at an earlier age I do not remember him talking about his days in the Military or about his early years.
His name was Hector Gillanders and His wife’s name was Bessie. Unfortunately due to family circumstances I have no birth date or date of death for him. He had two sons. Robert Hector Gillanders and Hector Gillanders. Hector Jnr separated himself and Grand dad from the rest of the family and took total charge over my Grand father and so I have no knowledge of his life at all. I am working on the geneology of our family and have drawn a blank on my Grandfather. I was wondering as to whether or not there would be any way that you could help me with any information on his tenure with the MOTHS or put me in contact with someone at the MOTHS who would be able to assist me. I cannot even apply for a birth certificate because I have no birth date. I cannot even remember when he passed away. So I cannot even know who my great great grandparents were. I do know that he had a brother (Eddie) and a sister (Marion) but have no information on them either. Could you please help me put any puzzle pieces together.
I sincerely hope that you can help me or put me in contact with anyone who can.
Japanese attack upon Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in April 1942
To Whom This May Concern:
I am undertaking research into events and persons surrounding the Japanese attack upon Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in April 1942.
Two of those service personnel have specific connections with South Africa:
Flt/Lt. Rae ‘Tommy’ Thomas, DFC 40444 (n-o-k listed as in Kenilworth, Cape Province, South Africa; he was stated to have been from “Cape Town”. Click here for further details about his life)
Capt. Caesar Otway (from the U.K. but moved to South Africa. I believe that he died there). I am hoping to locate additional details about their war service, and in the case of Otway, what happened to him post war (did he retire while in South Africa or before, when died, where buried, next of kin, photos, etc.). Click here for more.
Are you able to provide any direction in this regard as to where I might find further details of their lives?
Any assistance you would be able to offer would be most appreciated.
Kindest regards,
Arden Phair
