Delville Wood Ceremony

The ceremony begins. Cliff Eksteen, Old Bill of Lone Tree Shellhole was the MC, and Moth Corrie J van Rensburg was the flagman. Note how well the cemetery had been prepared ahead of time, thanks to the townsfolk of Kaapschehoop.

Berets off during the prayer. Barbara James, who as usual had a reading and lesson that were particularly well chosen for the occasion, conducted the short service for us.

Piper and Trumpeter from the Stevenson-Hamilton Pipe Band. The way surrounding woods echoed the sounds of the pipes and trumpet was something very special. Someone commented that it was almost ghostly.

District Old Bill Butch James salutes the grave of Moth Evan after laying a wreath on behalf of the Lowveld Dugout..

Colonel Piet Schoeman, who travelled from Waterval Boven to lay a wreath. Piet’s uncle, Flip Grobler, was wounded at Delville Wood, and later drowned at sea when his troop ship was sunk by German torpedo.

Charl and Andrea Fourie, owners of the Bohemian Groove Café, who did so much trouble to accommodate us after the parade. We had warned them ahead of time to expect about 25 to 30 pax. In the end there were close to 60, and yet they coped. Well done!
