LEST WE FORGET

This poem was published by "Punch" anonymously on 8n December 1915.  It was a success and soldiers copied it, quoted it and discussed it in the trenches.  The poem became a source of strength and determination.

After reading the poem, an American, Moina Michael, suggested that the poppy should be used as a symbol for all those who died in the war and that the wearing of a poppy would be an eye catching way of remembering our dead.  From 1920, the poppy was internationally accepted as the Flower or Remembrance, and every year thereafter, on 11 November, countries around the world, hold remembrance services.

The immortal words of Laurence Binyon.

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them".

PROVINCIAL BRANCHES

With over 40 Local Branch Chairmen distributed throughout South Africa, it is simply too long a list to include in this web page.  Therefore only the names and addresses of the Provincial Branch Chairmen have been listed.

If you have any questions on the Aims or Objectives of the SA Legion, they would be only too willing to provide you with the required information.  They would also inform you of the name of the Branch Chairman who is closest to your current address, and he too would be more than willing to welcome you to his branch as a visitor or member, should you decide to visit or join the SA Legion.

The SA Legion, like other ex servicemen's associations, tend to use the words, "Veterans" when describing their organisation.  Unfortunately the general public then associate this with Veteran Cars, Veteran Runners etc, implying that only those of advanced age are eligible.

Nothing is further from the truth.  The SA Legion is open to every currently serving man or women in the SANDF.  It is not a political organisation, or a union.  It is simply an organisation for serving and ex servicemen and women, who, due to their commitment to South Africa, feel that they too should also remember those who went before, and either paid the supreme sacrifice, or were disabled, and perhaps today, years after their service, now need some compassion and help to continue to survive in today's ever increasing cost spiral.  That is where your very reasonable yearly subscription goes.  Remember too, you yourself, or your family, may one day find that you too are in a similar position.  So remember the simple motto of the SA Legion.

Not for ourselves, but for others!
