Del Mein Shellhole
2nd.Wednesday 19.30hrs Main Road Escombe
The Del-Mein shellhole was established in Escombe in 1954.
The name Del-Mein is derived from the battles of Delville Wood and El Alamein
From inception , meetings were held in the Escombe and Northdene Memorial Hall which was built in 1923 as a memorial to the fallen of the First World War. The Hall was handed over to the Shellhole in 1957. The first two cottages were built in 1974 on ground bought by the Shellhole and today there are a total of six cottages occupied by members of the Shellhole.
In the run up to the 80th. Jubilee of the hall being opened in 1923, major restoration work was carried out mainly thanks to major fund raising by the Paybill MOTH Alan Bauer.
The Hall Jubilee was celebrated with a parade/ceremony.
The following year the 50th.Jubilee of the Shellhole was celebrated with a colourful parade at which 100 candles were lit, nearly corresponding to the number of names on the honors boards. A specially designed Chandelier incorporating 12 lights reminiscent of the 12 stars on the MOTH badge was lit. The Shellhole has a membership of around 50 and the Delmein Social Club bar is open 7 days a week from 10.00hrs.
