SAVANNAH EVENING- MPUMALANGA SHELLHOLE

2009-03-27

*****

There was a disappointing turnout for the Savannah Evening this year, probably because it was a Friday, and the first Pro20 match against Australia was on. Or was it because I failed to send out sms reminders?

Whatever the cause, it was a pity because a good time was had by those present, and our speaker on the night, Otch Otto, was spellbinding (again).

We, the SADF/Bush War generation were reminded again how little we know about our own war. In fact we all know a lot more about WW2. What was especially interesting about Otch’s talk was the background to the operation which he was able to colour in for us.

<<<Hoe lyk die SaMajoor dan so kwaad? Shellhole Sgt Major Johan looking as if he’s just spotted an unpolished boot.

>>> Moth Karel de Beer, one of our Savannah Vets, paying attention (for a change) during Otch’s talk.

<<<< Old Bill Malcolm Sands tries to tidy Karel up for his close-up.

L-R: Malcolm Sands, Otch Otto, Karel de Beer, Danie Schreuder.

The three Savannah Veterans who attended:

Karel de Beer, Otch Otto, Danie Schreuder.

Thanks to all who attended.

Remember that it is up to us to make sure that these pieces of OUR history are not distorted or forgotten.

(that was my little preach for today)

Mpumalanga Shellhole’s R&R weekend in Andover

22-24 May 2009

*****

Over the weekend of 22-24 May 2009 a handful of Moths and their families from Mpumalanga Shellhole (plus visitors from Barberton) went on safari in Andover Game Reserve, a provincial reserve near the KNP’s Orpen Gate.

<<<<< Moth Vincent De Lange and his lion bait/family during the mid morning game drive on Saturday.

>>>>Old Bill Malcolm Sands keeping the convoy in check. One of the cool things about Andover is that you MAY get out of your vehicles, as there are no lions, elephants or landmines.

<<<< Bill Ashton keeping up with the Bulls-Crusaders game.

>>>> Looking out over the dam and its crop of hippos

<<<< Moth Cliff Eksteen (on the right) Old Bill of Lone Tree Shellhole in Barberton, choosing a hippo he wouldn’t like to be chased by.

>>>> Sea Cows.

<<<< Cara and Jazmynn, Moth Cliff’s daughter and grandchild, checking out Pat Robson’s braai technique with mixed reactions.

>>>> In the lapa on Saturday evening, Malcolm thanked everybody who came along, while we burnt him at the stake…

Well done to Malcolm for putting this together. By the sounds of things this might become an annual event.

See you next year?
