Madison has attended in her short time more MOTH meetings and Provincial meetings than some members have in a year. She has also stated that it has been a privilege to be part of the MOTH Veterans of South Africa and has enjoyed her time with us. She is hoping to attend the MOTH 85th Parade before she returns home. |

Good day, my father Brian Wilton du plessis was a member of your dugout until he passed away in october 1967 at the age of 41. He had a moth funeral and is buried in the old memorial cemetery. His headstone features the moth emblem and motto.
I left bloemfontein in1979 and returned for a short visit in 1990. I will not be able to make the trip again and would sincerely appreciate it if the moths could check on the condition of the grave.
Regards, Beryl-ann du plessis.

I have been planning (saving for) this trip for the last 3 years as I wanted to go to the Queens March for the 11/11/11 Remembrance Day Parade. Our whole holiday was planned around this date. We were able to visit Holland (and a day in Belgrade, Belgium) and then over to England and Ireland. I was in contact with Kevin Swords of General Browning Shellhole who organised my tickets for the parade as well as the Westminster Abbey service which was held on the 10/11/11. We were then invited to the House of Commons for a lunch in the ‘staff’ canteen organised by a Moth who used to work there.
The parade was made up of many regiments from the Allies as well as wars since the 2nd World War. I was informed that the total numbers was in the region of 4000 marchers! The streets were packed 6 deep or more on both sides for 90% of the route. All traffic and pedestrians came to a standstill for the 2 minutes silence. It was quite something to have almost total silence in the middle of London at 11h00! I was also able to lay a wreath in honour of L/Cpl Paul Watkins (son of Rod Watkins, PPB Eastern Cape) who was killed in Afghanistan in September 2011 and also in honour of all fallen South Africans in all wars.
After the parade we made our way to General Browning Shellhole in Hackney (NW London) to join them for their Remembrance Day parade day. This was a lunch and again more pints. I was able to hand over some banners from Shellholes in the Garden Route District to the immediate past OB of General Browning Shellhole. They also ‘raided’ my RSA flag!!! I wore this flag on my blazer for the march so that all who saw (hopefully on TV) would be able to pick me out in the mass. I was then able to raid a plaque for the Garden Route Raiders.
I want to thank Kevin Swords for all his help with me and for organising the tickets for the parade as well as the service at Westminster Abbey. Kevin is hopefully attending the 85th in Durban and as we will be attending hope to link up and return the favour.
Sadly I was unable to make contact with Oddbods, who Knew I was visiting, with the arrangement to contact them after the parade (Monday 14th) after leaving messages on the contact number to set a date.

MESCA West Rand District Cottages in Krugersdorp resident Mrs Susanna van Niekerk was born on 1909-11-11 and therefore turned 102 years old on the 11th November 2011! She’s been a resident in the cottage complex for 17 years and a beloved role model for all other residents and MOTH’s on how to fully live your life.
She clearly has the secret - no alcohol, no smoking and eating healthy for 102 years! She is a huge inspiration and a phenomenal woman. When visiting her, she has a lifetime’s worth of stories to tell and is eager to share special photographs which were taken after the Boer War and of her beloved family who she now has out lived. I challenge other cottage committee’s with residents over 100 years of age to contact us, maybe we can organize a get together for these phenomenal people who has survived so many amazing events in their life and give them a delightful day which they can enjoy and exchange stories of their past. |

When MOTH Crater Leadership realised the this year’s Armistice or Veterans’ Day will be a unique date not to be repeated again in 100 years it was decided to have a Remembrance Parade with invited guests on the 11th November at the residence of Moth Chris Sonnekus.
The parade started off with the MOTH Tin Hat March and exactly at the 11th Second of 11 the Minute past 11 o’clock the National Flag and the Moth flag was lowered with the touching “Last Post” Trumpet music almost guiding the flags down. AS is the tradition all over the world two minutes since was observed in remembrance of the fallen Moth Neville Lynn presented a wreath on behalf all fallen Moths and Me. Heloise De Wet followed suit by presenting a wreath on behalf of all fallen Civilians. Civilians Babs Viljoen and Marie Cane were awarded each with a Certificate of Good Comradeship for Non-Moths to highlight both Marie’s and Bab’s outstanding efforts to uplift the ideals of the Order. After the Ceremony was concluded, the guests sat down to a feast of cheese and wine sharing pleasant memories of friends who answered the sunset call. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
Armistice Day (also known as Remembrance Day) is on 11 November and commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning, the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. After World War II, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and to Remembrance Day in countries of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Armistice Day remains an official holiday in France and Belgium, known also as the Day of Peace in the Fields. In many parts of the world, people take a two-minute moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. local time as a sign of respect for the roughly 20 million people who died in the war. |

Moth Bruce Michler being installed as Old Bill of the Order 2011-2012 at the Moth GHQ AGM on the 20th of November 2011.
MOTH CITATION
Bruce Stanley Michler was born in Volksrust on 26 July 1944, and matriculated at the Belfast High School in 1962.
Bruce spent most of his working career with Barclays Bank, which later changed its name to First National Bank. He joined the bank in 1963 and retired as a Manager at the end of March 2000.
Bruce married Norma on 01 May 1971 and they have been blessed with three children - Andrew, Bronwyn, and Mark.
Regrettably Norma passed to higher service earlier this year.
Bruce commenced his National Service in Bloemfontein in July 1963. In April 1964, Bruce was posted to the Pretoria Regiment were he served in various posts including that of the units Second in Command.
During August 1978 and until 1984 Bruce was with the 81 Armoured Brigade and early in 1986 he was asked to join the 8 Armoured Division and served on the SWA Border.
In August 1990 following discussion with an ex Regimental colleague Bruce was talked into joining the MOTH as a member of Gorgeous Wrecks Shellhole.
Within a year, he found himself installed as the very green Pay Bill of the Pretoria District Dugout. He filled this position for three years and was then approached to take up office as the Transvaal Provincial Pay Bill, a post which he filled admirably! During this time, he instituted training for Pay Bills and was also concerned with improving the standard of control and reporting of finances within the Order.
In September 1996, following a three-year stint as the Provincial Pay Bill, Bruce took over as the Deputy Provincial Old Bill. Province was unfortunately denied the honour of having Bruce as the Provincial Old Bill, because in August 1997 he was "snatched” to serve on the National Executive!
As a member of the National Executive, he was soon co-opted onto the MOTH Cottages Management Committee and in June 2000, he was appointed as the Chairman of MCMC including MESCA. In 2005 it was decided to amalgamate MCMC with the MOTHWA equivalent and the Property Management Committee was born. Bruce was appointed as Chairman of the PMC which included MESCA.
Bruce has always kept in touch with Mothing at grassroots level and in 2003 was elected to the post of Old Bill of the Gorgeous Wrecks Shellhole and served as Treasurer of the Pretoria Branch of the MESCA Sound Memory Cottages. He currently holds the position of Chairman of the Joint Management Board for the Pretoria Branch of the MESCA Sound Memory Cottages and the Pretoria MOTHWA Haven.
Bruce has also been appointed as the Auditor/Competent Person for the Platinum Provincial Dugout since 2000.
Being a Moth is not Bruce's only interest and he has served on committees in various organisations, the most notable being:
The Pretoria Regiment Association
The First Rivertrail Scout Group
The Bryanston Methodist Church Council
The Brooklyn Methodist Church Council
The South African Armour Association
The following MOTH Awards have been given to Bruce:
Certificate of Comradeship in July 1999 by his Shellhole and the
Certificate of Merit in March 2000
It is now the National Executives privilege and pleasure to appoint Bruce as the Old Bill of the MOTH for the 2011/12 year in recognition of his outstanding work for the Order.

PLEASE WEAR A POPPY
"Please wear a poppy," the lady said
And held one forth, but I shook my head.
Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,
And her face was old and lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
A boy came whistling down the street,
Bouncing along on care-free feet.
His smile was full of joy and fun,
"Lady," said he, "may I have one?"
When she's pinned in on he turned to say,
"Why do we wear a poppy today?"
The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered, "This is Remembrance Day,
And the poppy there is the symbol for
The gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I are free -
That's why we wear a poppy, you see.
"I had a boy about your size,
With golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout,
Free as a bird he would race about.
As the years went by he learned and grew
and became a man - as you will, too.
"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
But he'd seemed with us such a little while
When war broke out and he went away.
I still remember his face that day
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye,
I'll be back soon, Mom, so please don't cry.
"But the war went on and he had to stay,
And all I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight,
(I can see it still in my dreams at night),
With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.
"Till at last, at last, the war was won -
And that's why we wear a poppy son."
The small boy turned as if to go,
Then said, "Thanks, lady, I'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful fight,
But your son - did he come back all right?"
A tear rolled down each faded check;
She shook her head, but didn't speak.
I slunk away in a sort of shame,
And if you were me you'd have done the same;
For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed,
Thought our freedom was bought - and thousands paid!
And so when we see a poppy worn,
Let us reflect on the burden borne,
By those who gave their very all
When asked to answer their country's call
That we at home in peace might live.
Then wear a poppy! Remember - and give!

Old Bill Mookie Wantenaar and his wife Anne were invited to the Platinum Province AGM over the week end of the 29th - 31st July. They Arrived atOR Tambo on the Friday, and were picked up by the Platinum Provincial Pay Bill Dave Berry (he has access to the money for petrol). Dave then took them on a tour of Pretoria, the Voortrekker Monument and the various walls of remembrance in the area, then in the afternoon the Union buildings. Early evening drinks were held at Eveden House, to see the complex as well as to meet some of the local Platinum Province members. The Old Bill and Anne were then moved onto Gem Homes Irene, for a very enjoyable Old Bills Dinner. Saturday started off with breakfast at Cottesloe Homes, a tour of the complex, and shown the new solar geysers being installed - a total of 34, which are hoped to save the complex around 35% - 40% on Eskom bills -a total of R700K over 8 years.
Morning tea was then held at Dickie Fritz after a tour of the complex. Then off to the AGM which was held at Apex (Regiment Oos Transvaal) Military Base in Brakpan on the East Rand. Om the Sunday Old bill Mookie attended the Platinum Province meeting - while his wife went with the ladies gambling at the local casino. Then back to the airport to get away from the cold. Platinum Province thanks Old Bill Mookie and his good lady Anne for giving up their time spending it with the Province. Thank you.

This year’s ceremony was a combined effort between Lone Tree Shellhole and Mpumalanga Shellhole.
It was held in the Kaapschehoop cemetery, next to the grave of Moth Evan Davies, a Delville Wood survivor.
The chances are very good that we will continue to have our Delville Wood event at Kaapschehoop from now on.
See you there in 2012.

Dear Sir,
While I was away in Australia over the last few months many of my personal belongings were taken without my permission to a 2nd hand shop in Ballito (Waynes World). Amongst my belongings was a collage which I had recently had made.
It consisted of a 2nd World War photo of my Dad in uniform taken during the War together with his eight War medals (miniatures and large), two army canes, epaullette badges and insignia and his cardboard dogtags. The collage was apparently purchased at the shop by an unknown person for the amount of R500.
Quite obviously I am extremely keen to locate this collage and appeal to the public to please assist me in retrieving it. Perhaps someone might know of its whereabouts or the person who might have purchased it.
If so please get hold of me on the following contacts e-mail andrew.stevens@iinet.net.au or andrew@theballitocircle.co.za
sms 0825535297

A considerable reward is offered for the retrieval of this collage,
Yours faithfully,Andrew Stevens |

MOTH’s Rod and Paul Watkins at his induction into the MOTH
by Old Bill Stan Bezuidenhout on 06 January 2010. |
It is with deep sadness and regret that the Eastern Cape Provincial Dugout, Settlers District Dugout and Outspan Shellhole announce the passing to higher service of MOTH Paul Watkins at the age of 24 years on Saturday the 17th of July 2011.
Paul is the eldest son of Rod and Gill Watkins, with Rod being a senior member of the MOTH having served as Provincial Old Bill and in a number of Executive positions at Shellhole, District and Provincial level. Paul Watkins was inducted into the MOTH at Outspan Shellhole on the 6th of January 2010 at the age of 22, and was probably one of the youngest members of the Order.
MOTH Paul Watkins was a member of the British Army (9th/12th Royal Lancers - Prince of Wales's) and was part of the International Coalition fighting the war on terror in Aghanistan. Paul was on a routine partnered patrol with the Afghan National Army in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand Province, to engage with the local population, when the patrol came under small arms fire. He was in a fire support position at a roadblock, tracking the progress of a foot patrol from his Jackal vehicle. The foot patrol was returning to the vehicle when both teams came under small arms fire. Paul received a fatal gunshot wound during this incident. Paul was the 332nd British soldier to have died as a result of hostile action while serving in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001
On behalf of all MOTH’s we extend our condolences to parents Rod and Gill, brothers Luke and Simon, and other family members.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning – we will remember him. |

Every year, during the winter months, Warrior Shellhole has a bus trip for the residents of our combined cottage scheme. This annual trip is made possible by the very generous donation of the 44 seater luxury coach by Rouan, the owner of Rilanco Bus Services, based in Pretoria. This trip has been an on-going event in the Warrior diary for at least 10 years now and we have been to Smuts House (Irene), The War Museum (Saxonwold), The Air Force Museum (Pretoria) and last year to Rusty Shellhole in Rustenburg, to name just a few.
This year we did a scenic drive around the Hartebeespoort Dam - suitably fortified with copious amounts of Old Brown Sherry to keep the winter chills at bay, before arriving at The View, in Parktown, the home of the Jocks - Transvaal Scottish - where we had an amazing tour of the recently refurbished building and museum. Ian, the Caterer, provided us with a scrumptious lunch of chicken a la king and salads while the ever friendly barman kept the drinks flowing with amazing speed.
The oldest person on the trip this year was "Aunty Eva" who is 94 years young, closely followed by Trevor Dekker at 84! And you can trust me that these two kept up with the rest of us "youngsters" in the sherry stakes!! A great time was had by all and, with the Sgt Major paying the majority of the fines - ably rigged by the Dekker brothers - we wended our (very) merry way back to Warrior contemplating where we will go to next year.

Military Veterans Bill [B1-2011]
We, the citizens of S.A. are extremely concerned and disappointed that the definition of a Military Veteran has been changed by Mr Makwetla, the Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, when addressing the Parliamentary Committee on 25th May 2011. Having seen the newspaper reports, PMG summary and minutes of that meeting it appears that conscripts and Reserve Force members are no longer considered to be part of the Defence Force! Thus they will not be considered as Military Veterans in South Africa.
The definition of Military Veterans has been discussed at various levels culminating with a final one submitted in the Bill which was discussed as part of the public debate. In no documents that the CMVO could find, was this brought up or contested. Now at the final stages of the Bill going to Parliament, the definition has changed dramatically, without consultation. The conscripts and Reserves (at times) are defined as;
- “not permanent”, “not full-time members”, “Members of the non-statutory forces and permanent members of the SANDF had served on a full-time basis and were not comparable to conscripts”,
- “excluded from the list of members submitted by the SANDF during integration”,
- “not deserving of further assistance by Government”,
- “Conscripts were not subjected to the same responsibility as the permanent members of the Defence Force and should not be entitled to the same benefits”,
- “National conscription does not make a person part of the defence force”,
- “apartheid-era conscription “disciplinary upliftment of the youth” but of a temporary nature, etc.
It appears that this Bill is now only for those that fought on a permanent basis in the Liberation struggle. So that should mean only permanent SADF, MK and APLA members. This excludes Transkei, Ciskei, Boputshwane, Venda Defence Forces and AZANLA. It will also exclude the WWI, WWII and Korean soldiers. It further excludes all the ex SADF Coloured, Black and Indian members as very few of them were permanent – mostly on short term contracts. This is not in the interests of uniting the Military Veterans in South Africa.
There are many Military Veterans who are recognised by the current Act who will now be no-longer Military Veterans. Organisations that have already been recognised will now have to change their membership, including MK MVA etc.
We call on the Government to either:
- Stay with the definition as already discussed in the Bill OR
- To reopen discussions on this matter before this Bill is taken to Parliament
Please fill in your details below before 7th June and please forward to the Lgr Godfrey Giles, Chairman Council of Military Veterans’ Organisations of South Africa, CMVO on chairman@cmvo.org or fax 0866848592.

To those killed in Air Rhodesia's Viscount 'Umniati' on this dark day in 1979, we are thinking of you and of your bereaved families and friends. We shall not forget.....R.I.P. from Keith Nell and the Viscount Team.
Thirty Two years ago today (12 February 2011), at 17:00pm, Air Rhodesia's Vickers Viscount 'Umniati' took off from Kariba Airport to Salisbury (now Harare) with 59 passengers and crew on board. Five minutes later, a heat seeking SAM 7 missile struck the inner port engine causing the engine and fuel tank to explode, sending the aircraft into a downwards spiral and crash into the dense bush, approximately 45 km from Kariba Airport. There were no survivors.
The Umniati was the second civilian airliner of Air Rhodesia to be brought down by Joshua Nkomo's ZIPRA terrorists with SAM 7 missiles, with a total loss of life of 107 people. The first aircraft to be brought down with a missile five months before was the Vickers Viscount 'Hunyani' in which 10 of the 18 passengers who survived the crash landing were brutally gunned down at the crash site.
The full story with excellent narrative and footage taken at the scenes of devastation is shown in the DVD 'VISCOUNT DOWN' - with live interviews including the BBC interview with Joshua Nkomo who gleefully claimed responsibility - while sadly, world leaders remained silent without a word of condemnation. To this day, the two Rhodesian Viscount disasters are little known about, but were instrumental in changing the course of history in Southern Africa and beyond, culminating with the Lockerbie and Twin Towers disasters.
For the first time since the tragedies occurred, it is planned to hold a massive Commemoration Event for the victims in Johannesburg on 3 September 2012, which is the 32nd anniversary date of what was Rhodesia's 9/11.
