Sunset Call: Moth Stewart Tweedie of Tommy Rendle V.C Shellhole 7th Dec 2019.

It is with much regret that we have to inform you of the passing to Higher Service of 21308 Moth Stewart Tweedie of Tommy Rendle V.C Shellhole on Sat 7th December 2019.

Moth Stewart Blake Tweedie was a WWII Veteran who enlisted for active service in July 1940.  After qualifying as a Vickers M. G. Instructor, he rejoined his Regiment, the 2nd Battalion Witwatersrand Rifles. He volunteered to go to the Balkans, but the mission was cancelled and he was transferred to Regiment President Steyn Support Company of the 1st SA Brigade under Gen Dan Pienaar.  He fought in the Battle of El Alamein, where he was awarded a Military Medal for acts of bravery as a machine gun section commander between 28 May and 27 July 1942. Following deployment to Swakopmund in South West Africa (Namibia) after the short break and Barberton (1943) he was sent to Italy and transferred to the 6th Armoured Division in 1944/45 till the war ended. Besides his Military Medal, he was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Africa Star  (8th Army Clasp), the Italy Star and the Africa Services Medal. During a short holiday over Christmas of 1942/43  he met his future wife, Yvonne, whom he married after the war in November 1945. Moth Tweedie also served in the South African Permanent Force from 3 March 1947 till 3 June 1953.

Moth Tweedie joined the Order  at Hard Tack Shellhole in Umkomaas on the 19th of July 1985.  He served as the Old Bill and later also the Sgt Major.  During this time he qualified as a Bowls Coach (1987) and Umpire (1991). In March 2018 he transferred to Tommy Rendle VC Shellhole in Rugby, Cape Town, where he was much loved and respected. He celebrated his 100th birthday at Tommy Rendle VC Shellhole and received well wishes from far and wide. Moth Tweedie will be fondly remembered by all who had the honour of meeting him.

Stewart’s funeral service will be held at the Methodist Church in Umkomaas where he will be laid to rest. The memorial service for Moth Stewart Tweedie will be held at St Matthews Church ,Tableview on Friday 13th December at 11h00. Moth Daphne Floyd CWPD Adjutant
