Sunset Calls

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,and in the morning.

We will remember them

Doug Murray (on the left in this pic), formerly of Mpumalanga Shellhole, White River,  answered the Sunset Call on 11 February 2012. Doug moved to Sydney Australia a few years ago. Unfortunately Doug got Alzheimer's recently and spent his last days in a home.
Doug served the Shellhole as Quartermaster and Sgt Major in his time here. It was as Sgt Major that Doug who introduced the phrase "to your duties at the bar,...dismiss", which we still use in our Shellhole today.
Mpumalanga Shellhole,
White River.

It is with great regret that Moth Keith Spencer of Dickie Fritz Shellhole Answered the Sunset call on the 29th December 2011. Keith was Shellhole Old Bill for many years and was also the District Old Bill at some stage, he also served on the Dickie Fritz MESCA Committee as a regular member as well as MESCA Chairman.

Keith was a good old Navy man and will be missed by all who knew him.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember Keith Spencer.

Regards
Leon Apicella
Dickie Fritz Shellhole Old Bill.

Greetings One & All

It is with regret that Southern Kwazulu Natal Province must inform you that Moth Denys Hudson of Rough-But-Ready Shellhole, Mbango Valley, Port Shepstone has answered the Sunset Call.

AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN
AND IN THE MORNING
WE WILL REMEMBER HIM

The ten years plus I have known Moth Hudson I will never forget that smiling face and warm but firm hand shake he offered whenever he greeted you.

Yesterday 27th December 2011, I attended his service with twenty one other Moth Members and Moth Coward of the National Executive. The stature of the man could be seen not only in the wonderful words spoken of him but also the the overflow as the church was filled to capacity.

I would like to thank the Old Bill, Moth Lew Lloyd Evans in taking the time off to fly home from holidaying in Johannesburg to arrange the MOTH portion of the funeral and then fly back to his family afterwards.

A fitting end to his service was the Bugler and Piper and the form up of the Moth members.

Yours in true MOTHdom

Moth Clive R Emmerson

Yet again, an exceptional man with whom we were lucky to rub shoulders has been 'called to higher service".

We Moths are extremely privileged to share the company of some amazing people who played their parts, big or small, in the writing of history.

Jack Harris fought the Japs in the jungles of east Asia during WW2, and probably told none of you about it!
Be sure to drag stories out of our older Moths while you still can, guys....

Jack's family chose Lone Tree Shellhole (Barberton) to host Jack's memorial service, and they did a fine job of it.
In the pic attached, the Lone Tree Shellhole members (and two Mpumalanga Shellhole members) enjoy obeying the Harris family's order to "celebrate Jack's life, not mourn his passing".

Eric ball answered the sun set call on the 6th October 2011.Eric was a member of Last Post Shellhole and a resident at MOTH Cottesloe homes. We will remember him.

Moth Paul Watkins must have been one of the, if not the, youngest Moth in the Order in South Africa. He grew up with the MOTH and in particular his dads Shellhole, Outspan.

It was with a heavy heart that we in the Eastern Cape and in particular the Port Elizabeth area, where he was well known to us, received the sad news of his calling to the higher command. Our thoughts and strength at this time go to Moth Rod and Gill in this time of need.

WE WILL REMEMBER HIM

Many thanks,

South African Legion of Military Veterans Pretoria Branch Chairman dies tragically in car accident.

The SA Legion is sad to announce the death of our Pretoria Branch Chairman, Lgr Henri (Bossie) Boshoff, who was killed tragically in his car at 7 A.M. en route to the Annual ANZAC Remembrance Service at the Australian High Commissioner‘s private residence on 25th April 2011. A number of us remarked that Bossie was not at the service only to be told the tragic news a few hours later.

There were many facets to Bossie, he was a family man, our condolences go to his wife, Leonie and his son Jean.  He was an academic – he had diplomas and degree but most of all he had practical knowledge – Bossie walked the talk. He had travelled extensively, always making time to talk to the people on the ground. Bossie’s nature allowed him to speak at any level and he always had time for everyone. Bossie was well liked and invited on numerous occasions by governments, military attachés, veterans organisations and schools. “Bossie” was a military analyst at the internationally respected Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and was a regular guest on radio and television stations.  Bossie was a fountain of knowledge and we all called on him to give talks, lectures or find out what was happening in our environment. He always based his sound advice on facts or his conclusions drawn from facts.

Bossie was a very good soldier, firstly in the Reserves, part-time forces and then in the Regulars, the Permanent Force. He used his concern for his soldiers and the community to ensure they always got  most of his attention. He was an extremely hard worker. Bossie created a works programme which involved his troops and the community to build roads in the townships. This was a very successful project that should have been duplicated over and over.

Bossie was involved with the Police as well, chairman of his local CPF – he worked with police through out Africa and in the rest of the world.

Bossie was very involved in the military veterans environment. He was not only the Chairman of the Pretoria Branch of the Legion, but he assisted in all aspects like the Poppy use of the Poppy for the Comrades Marathon this year; the Wall of Recognition to be built in Johannesburg, concerts and shows etc. Bossie also chaired the Pretoria Monuments Services Council, which assisted a number of organisations with their Remembrance Services.  For the SA Legion he co-ordinated the SS Mendi Memorial Service in Atteridgeville, which has grown every year.  Bossie headed up the Annual Delville Wood Memorial Service in Burgers Park attended by so many. Bossie assisted the Council of Military Veteran Organisations of South Africa, CMVO, with their Annual Memorial Service at Fort Klapperkop as well as the Annual Remembrance Day Service held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

In July this year, Bossie had arranged to lead the South African Military Veterans tour to Delville Wood for the 95th Anniversary. He had ensured that the price was right; the correct places would be visited and the knowledgeable guides would inform us all the way. All of us will still go on the “BOSSIE’S TOUR” in his memory.

To a true South African Military Veteran who cared about everyone, young and old, in uniform or out of uniform, government or NGO, we all salute him and we will remember him!

Legion Greetings

Not for Ourselves but for Others

Hello

We heard that JC van Wyk had been admitted to ICU at the Sunward Park Hospital yesterday (Sunday 13 March 2011) and that he had water on the lungs.

Later on that night we got a call to say that he had double pneumonia and that the water was presenting a huge problem and if they did not get a handle on it soon, JC would have to go onto a ventilator.

Sadly JC passed on to Higher Service at 03:50 this morning. We contacted as many chaps as we could via SMS. The Brotherhood is in shock this morning at the sudden loos of life of one of our nearest and dearest, a long serving member of the Citizen then Reserve Force and a founder member of Laarsa and a member of Reveille MOTH Shellhole. In true fashion, our Sgt Major, had some of us up very early this morning as his departure was announced.

This message will not serve that man justice so I will not begin to say what he meant to so many Paratroopers both local and international. I just remember being on jumps with the reserve force and thinking, this jump is going to be OK because JC is despatching us today...

JC is now at peace, breathing easily, and is with his brother Dirk and all those that have gone before

Go Well, Brother, Friend...

Our thoughts and prayers are with Cynthia, Lee, Anton, Debbie, family and loved ones.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
WE WILL REMEMBER HIM.

Funeral details will follow, Anton will let us know what arrangements have been made Anton can be reached on JC's number 083 590 0709 or on 084 585 5215 Cynthia at home on 011 826 4477. I am not sure if his e-mail is being monitored but his address is J.C. van Wyk jcskywalker@vodamail.co.za

Please pass on our sympathies to those concerned with the answering of the Sunset Call of Moth Doug Stonebridge, The first Paybill of SKZN.

From the Executive of SKZN.

Every Best Wish
